The Challenge Day 3

Last night I added some more plug ins to this blog which are:

All in one SEO pack

This should help with the search engines and this is what the plug in is supposed to do:

* Automatically optimizes your titles for search engines
* Generates META tags automatically
* Avoids the typical duplicate content found on Wordpress blogs
* For Wordpress 2.7 you don’t even have to look at the options, it works out-of-the-box. Just install.
* You can override any title and set any META description and any META keywords you want.
* You can fine-tune everything
* Backward-Compatibility with many other plugins, like Auto Meta, Ultimate Tag Warrior and others.

Followsite

Thats a ‘keep me updated’ button at the bottom of every post. Hopefully visitors will like the content enough to want to know when something else is posted and return to read it.

Tweet Me

Every time something is posted on this blog news of it will land on Twitter. I’ll explain more about using Twitter and social bookmarking sites to get traffic another day, but it’s all good.

Automagic Twitter Profile URI

I haven’t quite figured that one out yet. I think it’s something to do with Twitter members being able to add posts to their profiles.

The plug ins are really easy to add with this new version of Wordpress – I’m impressed!

Feeds

I also added the RSS feed to Bloglines and added an RSS feed from the Internet Marketing category of my article directory to this blog. That’s good because the feed updates every time an Internet Marketing article is accepted on my directory and automatically adds new content to this blog.

I might add more feeds from different relevant categories, it’s all good information and fresh content to keep the search engines happy.

I took a quick peek at traffic statistics and already there is an increase, but I’ll wait until tomorrow to let you know the full January figures.

I won’t be doing much else until Sunday evening because I’m going to stay at my daughters overnight. Catch up with you tomorrow.

The Challenge Day 2

I left things yesterday with looking for content for this blog and that’s where I hit problems. I visited my article directory and looked in the Free Tools and Resources category and had a bit of a wake up call.

You see when I started my article directory in July 2007 to get the ball rolling I added a script that would import articles from another company. The next day 47,000 appeared and brought massive problems with them.

Many articles had been submitted to the wrong categories, new categories had been formed which duplicated some of the categories already there, for instance Mortgage and Mortgages, links were stripped from author bios and there were many crap articles that I wouldn’t have accepted.

The script got fixed for link stripping but it didn’t solve the other problems so I stopped using it after a week and just took articles that were manually submitted. I spent a lot of time putting things right but you always miss something.

Last night when I visited the Free Tools and Resources section I found that most of the articles in there were out of category, even one about buying coffins for goodness sake. When I found a suitable article for this blog I discovered that the link was dead. I then checked that authors account and he has over 500 articles on the directory and of the 20 or so articles that I checked all of the links were dead.

Not a good sign for somebody who is offering advice about Internet marketing. Something could have happened in his personal life to end his business, or he just might not have made it as an Internet marketer.  Either is possible but if it’s the latter it indicates just how tough it is to make it in a home business internet or otherwise.

Dead links leave directory owners with a quandary. We know that a lot of dead links might affect a websites status in the search engines so we need to deal with them. Three choices:

1. Find an active link of that author and replace the dead links with it.

2. Delete all of the articles

3. Replace the links with your own active links or those of a charity.

Usually I go for option 1 and then option 2 if I can’t find an active link for that author. I would feel as if it was cheating to go for option 3, though a link to a charity might be a good idea.

Adding Content

Now that I’ve sorted out the article directory and added a few posts from there I’m going to add some of my own fresh content to this blog. The search engines like unique content so I always intersperse my own content amongst other peoples articles.

I make sure that there are some good keywords in the titles and articles but not so many that it doesn’t make sense. I also add my keywords as tags to give my articles a search engine boost.

Thoughts About This Theme

I really like this theme and although currently I haven’t made many of my own changes I can see that it’s easy to do. When I write a new page and publish it the page automatically gets a link at the top of the page. On my other blogs I have to add those links with html.

I did try to add categories for the recommended website links but so far I haven’t managed that, but I’ll figure it out sooner or later.

Hello World

After writing some content I then decided to sort out my Google sitemap. Sitemaps are cool in that they make it easier for the search engines to find and index your web pages. I made my sitemap by easily adding a plugin to the blog and once I had set it up the sitemap notified Google and some other search engines that the blog was up and running. I was then able to indicate how often that I wanted Google to crawl different aspects of this blog.

You might be wondering why I attach so much importance to content, keywords, tags, sitemaps and search engines so I’ll try to explain. If you think of a new website as a shop, but the shop has nothing in the window, no signs and no advertising has been done, then unless somebody stumbles upon it by accident then it won’t have any customers.

The same applies to a website or blog so you need to signal to the search engines that you are up and running and keep them happy enough to send traffic your way.

After submitting the sitemap I placed an advert on a free advertising blog and then checked my other websites and blogs to see if they were linking to this blog. If not I will place a link and instantly have some backlinks.

During the rest of the evening I will be checking free Wordpress widgets and plug ins to see if there is anything that might be useful to me.

Previously we’ve discussed how to begin blogging and how to write effectively for the purpose of making money online.  Now I would like to touch on what to write.

Getting quickly to the point, you need to write on something you are both interested in and passionate about.  How to make money online begins with passion and it’s no different when you are blogging for the distinct purpose of making money online fast or any way you can.  You’ve chosen to blog to further your business interests and to make steady money online, so can you imagine writing about something mundane day after day?  You probably won’t do it and therefore your possibilities of making money online will suffer greatly.

It’s a fact you need to get used to, that to be a successful blogger you need to write often, probably daily.  You’ve got to find fresh topics to write about. Being interested in and passionate about something will naturally keep you on the path to blogging often and blogging well, and hey, the results will go a long way to assist you to make money online.

Hence, you must always find fresh topics to write about, and we’re going to discuss how to do just that in this article.  If you’re serious and passionate about making money online you’ll take the time to go through this process.

Post your blogs about the main theme you have chosen and make it a habit to post at least once every day, even if it’s only a comment on the newspaper.

It seems that, no matter how motivated and interested you are in the subject you blog about, your brain is bound to get exhausted over some time, so here are methods to brainstorm for content in your blog.

1) Check out what others are blogging about in your field of interest.  No, don’t copy them, simply get ideas to write about.  And the very best way to find related blogs is to use search tools to find the topics of interest to you and where various blogs are found.  From other blogs, you can gather more knowledge on your subject and you can also comment on what others have to say on your own blog!

2)  If you’re still stuck, search for news articles related to your niche in the local newspaper or online through news sites on Google and or Yahoo just to mention a few.

3)  Also associate with various social networks like forums with the same interest area you have chosen, and read and make comments thus having conversations with people with the same interest as you.   This way you will eventually build up a bank of questions and answers and interesting discussions to write about in your blog.  This will also come in handy much later in gaining traffic and maging you money online.

In conclusion let me say that, make money online ideas are plentiful but you’ve already chosen your idea so in your blog commit to write consistently about the topics we’ve discussed.  You’ll also find that the search engines will spider your blog on a more frequent basis if you are consistent and your subject matter is relevant to your keywords, hence gaining you traffic and hopefully fulfilling your interests of making money online.

Lets assume that you now have a blog full of content that you passionately wrote and should be of value visitors interested in your subject from which you want to make money online.

So, how do you actually get visitors to see your enticing content and possibly end up buying from you and you making money online?  Traffic (visitors) is the lifeblood of your blog. You have traffic and everything else running efficiently and your make money online ideas and dreams will be fulfilled.  You don’t have traffic and your blog remains lifeless in obscurity never making the money you hoped it would.

You can get that valuable traffic by getting your blog placed high up in the results pages of the search engines like Google, Yahoo, Msn, etc.  That’s where most people will come across your well written informative material that will end up attracting people enough and you will then know how to make money online because it will bring you a lot of traffic.

When potential customers search for information through the search engines and see your blog or site among the top results, they will naturally click through to your blog and potentially buy, thus assisting you to make money online fast or more appropriately, steadily.

Now the four thousand dollar question question then becomes how do you get your blog site higher up in the search engine listings.  That is an art and is called search engine optimization or SEO.  SEO is a very complex and hard subject to master, but you can certainly learn simple and effective techniques to conquer the search results for certain of the less popular keywords.

This optimizing for keywords is most important if you’re serious about making money online, so take heed.  The first step is for you to determine the keywords that you want to optimize your blog site for.  Lets next search in the search engines for the pertinent keyword you’ve choosen and wish to make money online with.  If you see from your search that millions of people search for that keyword or keyphrase do you think you can compete for high rankings?  I don’t think so.

So modify your keyword and keep searching in the search engines until you find a word or appropriate phrase that may have 500,000 searches or something like that and then it becomes a manageable keyword or phrase to optimize your blog for.

To optimize your blog, first change your blog title so that it has your main keyword in it.  You can change your blog title in the Blogger control panel or Wordpress blog engine when your’re creating it.

One last bit of blog search engine optimization, you should also sprinkle your chosen and not overly competitive keyword in your posts whenever possible. Doing this shows the search engines that your nicely written blog is relevant to the topic of your keyword. But don’t overdue it otherwise you will not make steady money online since the search engines will punish you instead of reward you for your efforts.

In conclusion, ways to make money online are plentiful, blogging being one of them.  So keep in mind that in your blog you are writing to humans and using your keyword rediculously often just for the search engines will not sit well with the search engines and you probably will not make steady money online through this source. Therefore write to humans using the SEO suggestions I’ve made, within reason.
